Bakersfield, California - Kristin Armstrong of the Exergy-Twenty12 team continued her tear through the elite women’s road racing ranks, dominating Thursday’s Amgen Tour of California Time Trial on a scorching hot day in Bakersfield.
Armstrong, the defending Olympic Time Trial gold medalist, is trying to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London. Riding her Felt DA bike, she sent a message loud and clear that she has the form to be a medal contender again.
With temperatures soaring past 90 degrees, Armstrong was the only rider to go under 40 minutes on the 29.7km course. Clocking a time of 39:58.28, she beat second-place finisher Alison Powers by more than a minute.
“Right now I’m just training in hopes that I get selected on June 15 to go to the London Games,” Armstrong told Cyclingnews.com after her win. “I really wanted to focus on my longer distance time trialing. We’re used to racing about 20 minute, so when you add another 20 minutes to it, it’s a different story.”
