Degenkolb Wins Stage 2 in Spain!

Monday, August 20, 2012
Viana, Spain -- John Degenkolb scored a huge win for the Argos-Shimano squad Sunday, sprinting to a Vuelta a España stage victory on his Felt F1 team bike. The 23-year-old German edged out Australian Allan Davis and Brit Ben Swift to win the 181km Stage 2 from Pamplona to Viana.

After the win, Degenkolb gave credit to his Argos-Shimano team, saying they set him up perfectly to take the win.

“My whole team did super work and brought me to the rear wheels of Davis and Swift, so that in the end we had only a three man sprint,” he told Radsport-News.com. “It is the best team when the job is setting up sprints, whether it is for Marcel Kittel or for me."

It was a hot day in northern Spain, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit. A three-man breakaway escaped early, just 6km into the race. They gained a maximum lead of about 3 minutes but were finally caught just 12km before the finish line.

Degenkolb’s Argos-Shimano team helped control the final kilometers, setting up their man for the bunch sprint. The win was Degenkolb’s sixth of the 2012 season and perhaps the biggest yet of his young career.
