Alzate Wins Stage One at Callville Bay

Friday, February 25, 2011
Las Vegas, Nevada – Team Exergy rider Carlos Alzate claimed the team’s first win of the season, soloing to victory in Stage One of the Callville Bay Classic.  Alzate bested a field featuring numerous domestic pros in warm and windy conditions.  Fellow Exergy rider Eric Barlevav took second in the field sprint and third on the stage.
Aggressive from the gun, Team Exergy went to the front immediately on the stage looking to take advantage of the windy conditions.  Exergy’s Andres Diaz made a solo bid early in the race, and quickly amassed a 60 second advantage.  However, Diaz was brought back by the field with 50km remaining.
After a series of counter-attacks, Alzate escaped with one other rider.  The two worked well together and established a three minute lead over the field.  With 15km remaining, Alzate attacked his breakaway companion and rode alone to the stage win 2 minutes ahead of the field.  Alzate’s breakaway partner was caught by the field, and Exergy sprinter Barlevav took second in the field sprint.  Diaz recovered from his earlier attack and finished fourth on the stage.
The Callville Bay Classic is Team Exergy’s first race of the season, and Alzate’s win is Team Exergy’s first win as a Pro Team.  Alzate and his teammates rode Felt F1 road bikes in Stage One and Alzate will defend his lead in the Stage Two time trial on a Felt B2 TT bike.
