Armstrong 2nd at Women's Tour of Flanders

Monday, April 02, 2012

Belgium — Kristin Armstrong turned in another strong result for her USA National Team at the Women’s Tour of Flanders Sunday, riding her Felt F1 to a second-place finish. Armstrong conquered the steep cobblestone climbs of the 127.4km race through northern Belgium, repeating her second-place finish here in 2008.

“It makes me feel good,” said Armstrong, who rides for the Exergy2012 team and has her sights set on the 2012 London Olympics. “I have to come in strong to show that I can race in Europe. This is just one more step towards selection.”

The race was marked by a number of early attacks on the legendary climbs that were lined with screaming fans. Armstrong’s teammate Carmen Small McNellis was first to strike on the decisive Kwaremont climb, setting up Armstrong to make her move. When she did, only German Judith Arndt could respond. The two broke away and fought it out at the finish, where Armstrong took a strong second place.
