Stage win, Overall Podium in Spain Shows Return to Form for Danielson

Monday, August 10, 2009
Spain -- Garmin-Slipstream rider Tom Danielson announced a return to form with a stage win and third-place General Classification finish in the five-day Vuelta a Burgos stage race in Spain this week. Danielson won Saturday’s Stage 4 Time Trial, completing the 15-kilometer course on his Felt DA team bike in 17:09. Danielson’s Garmin-Slipstream teammate Danny Pate finished the TT second, 10 seconds back.

The win on Saturday was Danielson’s first of the season. The victory was a good indication that the American is on the path to recovery after having his season derailed this spring with a parasitic infection.

“I have been working relentlessly on my condition as well as my head," Danielson said after his win on Saturday. "It is nice to see what happens when both come together. The course was very challenging as it was a power course with a lot of wind. This result shows that I am a complete rider and I am coming into form. I am very happy to say the least.”

Danielson finished fifth in Sunday’s final stage, a difficult 155-kilometer ride with a mountaintop finish at Lagunas de Neila, dropping to third overall in the final standings. He lost contact with overall winner Alejandro Valverde in the final kilometer, but still managed to secure a podium spot, finishing third overall.

“Great battle with Valverde today,” Danielson said afterward. “My team was flawless and I definitely felt very strong on the climb. The stage win and overall podium is something to be very happy about.”
