Degenkolb Wins Again in Spain!

Wednesday, August 22, 2012
Logroño, Spain -- Argos-Shimano rider John Degenkolb is on a hot streak in Spain. On Wednesday the young German powered his Felt F1 to his second stage win of the week at the Vuelta a España. He won the 168km Stage 5 in Logroño, a circuit race consisting of eight laps on a 21km circuit, with a blinding sprint in the final dash to the line.

For Degenkolb, this has been a week to remember. He won Stage 2 in Viana on Sunday, and added a second win three days later. That brings his 2012 tally to seven total victories, but his wins at the Vuelta, the season’s final grand tour, rate as the biggest in his young career. (Click "Read More" to continue.)

Degenkolb played the finale to perfection. Set up by his Argos-Shimano teammates, he reacted quickly as Italian Daniele Bennati made the first move in the final sprint. The 23-year-old German closed down the gap and then dashed around the Italian to take the wine. Belgian Gianni Meersman finished third.

After five days of racing, Degenkolb also leads the points classification, trailed by Australians Allan Davis and Simon Clarke in second and third respectively.
