Lavelle Wins, Potts Second at Los Angeles Triathlon

Sept 7, 2008, Los Angeles—It’s been Becky Lavelle’s mantra during her run in the LifeTime Fitness Chase for the Toyota Cup series races: drill the bike, and let ‘em try to get her on the run.
Out of the water at Venice Beach with the leaders including Olympian Julie Swail, Lavelle boarded her Felt DA and was joined by Mary Beth Ellis, who gamely stayed close through the bike as the two tore away from the rest of the field.
With just Ellis to contend with after the 40k non-drafting bike leg, The American Lavelle put work to Ellis early in the 10k run in downtown Los Angeles, pushing to successfully crack her. Lavelle cruised across the finish with a comfortable 1:26 lead to take the win. Lavelle’s win put her in unassailable position to claim the LifeTime Fitness series title at the Dallas Open on Oct. 5.
In the men's race, American Andy Potts took the early race lead, but was captured with nine miles left in the bike by Australian Greg Bennett. Potts managed to keep the gap to Bennett at 25 seconds, but with his recent Hawaii Ironman training, simply lacked that extra speed gear.
The gap on the run hovered at 25 seconds the rest of the day. Bennett cruised home to the win, with Potts taking a solid second. Potts will compete at the Dallas series finale the weekend before he makes his Ironman debut at the Hawaii Ironman the weekend after the Dallas race.
